The Canadian government has expressed concern over US President Joe Biden’s plans for the “Buy America” program, which aims to ensure that local businesses benefit from federal spending.
Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said that the issue of free trade will be high on Ottawa’s agenda during her discussions with the Biden administration, noting that the two countries have very integrated economies.
In turn, Canadian Foreign Minister Mark Garneau told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation on Sunday that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau conveyed the country’s concerns about the Buy American program to Biden during a phone call on Friday that brought together North American leaders.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Biden will, on Monday, sign an executive order requiring the government to buy products made in the United States.
The new policies will include tightening government procurement rules to make it difficult for federal agencies to purchase imported products. The executive order will also ensure that SMEs have access to the information needed to participate in government auctions.
