Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico was placed on lockdown Friday following an active shooter alert.
Both the main base and the adjacent Chavez Housing area were secured. An emergency alert sent to all personnel read, “Lockdown Lockdown Lockdown … Active Shooter … Cannon AFB and Chavez Housing Are On Lockdown. Seek Shelter Immediately.”
Around 12:40 PM local time, Major Jackie Pienkowski confirmed the base had entered “active shooter protocol” and indicated that more information would be released as it became available.
Curry County Sheriff Michael Brockett stated that local law enforcement had not yet been requested to assist in the response. Authorities have not yet issued a formal statement on the incident.
