The Cape Verde national team won 3-0 over Mozambique to achieve its second successive victory in the group stage of the African Cup of Nations – today, Friday – and become the first team to qualify for the final eight.
Cape Verde secured the top spot in Group Two before the third round by reaching 6 points from two victories over third-placed Ghana and bottom-placed Mozambique, with a difference of 4 points from second-placed Egypt.
Pepe opened the scoring for Cape Verde in the 32nd minute with a shot from a long distance from a free kick, which Mozambique goalkeeper Ernan made a mistake in clearing, hitting his hand and into the net.
Ryan Mendes doubled the lead six minutes after the start of the second half, taking advantage of defender Edmilson’s mistake in receiving the ball to go one-on-one and shoot into the net.
Kevin Pena concluded Cape Verde’s goals in the 69th minute with a powerful shot from a long distance that reached the far right corner of the Mozambican goalkeeper.
Ryan Mendes, a Turkish player for Fatih Karagümruk, won the Best Player of the Match award.
The Cape Verde national team will conclude its matches in the group stage by facing Egypt next Monday.
