Despite the fact that in the country there is a general drop in the theft of insured cars of 11% to be located in 62,208 units stolen during 2021, there are five entities where this crime reported growth of up to 45%, reported the Mexican Association of Institutions of Insurance (AMIS).
According to the AMIS insured car theft report, in Zacatecas there was an increase in car theft of 45.76% last year compared to 2020.
It is followed by Aguascalientes (22.74%); San Luis Potosi (16%); Durango (9.01) and Colima (4.72%).
In the last year, the aforementioned states have reported various crimes derived from confrontations between rival criminal groups.
“These are areas where not only car theft has increased, but also various federal and state crimes,” said Normal Alicia Rosas, general director of AMIS.
He explained that there is a correlation between car theft and other types of crimes since “normally they do not steal the car to keep it and drive around with it, normally it is for other types of criminal activities. So, well, it is an indicator and yes, be very careful with our vehicles.”
Violence in robberies
Of the 62,208 reported car thefts, 60% were carried out with the use of violence where Sinaloa occupies the first position, in this entity in 82.39% of the theft cases some aggression was reported, followed by Guerrero with 76.3%; Zacatecas with 76.06%; Guanajuato with 73.2; Puebla with 71.67% and Michoacán with 71.34 percent.
The reported robberies have to do with the technology of opening and starting new cars. “It is very difficult to start the vehicle if the key is not there or if the device is not relatively close, it even has to be inside the vehicle, so the crime has to be committed in the presence of the driver and this is what has increased the percentage of robbery with violence”, explained Norma Alicia Rosas.
The directive added that although in the last three years a decrease in thefts of insured cars has been reported, this trend is not expected to continue.
“What we are seeing is that there are practically different factors and we believe that it will no longer go down, we even believe that it reached a floor and, well, little by little, we will observe what the behavior is.”
