The Ministry of Transport of the Crimea
The press office of the Russian Ministry of Emergencies of the Crimea Peninsula reported that the crossing of cars to the Kerch Bridge was stopped for the second time in one day, due to the accumulation of snow.
Traffic on the bridge was closed for the first time at six o’clock on Friday morning. Movement from Crimea to Krasnodar province resumed two hours later. However, due to the deteriorating climate, the bridge was completely closed an hour later.
A statement issued by the office said: “Work is currently underway to eliminate the consequences of the snowfall.”
He added that the weather in Crimea is still bad. The monthly percentage of snowfall fell last night alone in the Kerch Bridge area, bringing the snowfall over the bridge to about half a meter. The meteorology warns of the risk of avalanches in the region, and recommends that car owners avoid using most of the large and mountainous roads in the peninsula.
The Kerch Bridge (or Crimea Bridge), which connects the Krasnodar Province with the Russian Crimea Peninsula, is the longest in Russia and Europe, with a length of 19 km. The bridge section dedicated to cars was inaugurated in May 2018, while passenger trains began to move over the bridge in December 2019 and freight trains in June 2020.
