The head of Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, announced the expansion of coverage of the Internet for Tod@s Program for public transport in the city, this includes trolleybuses, Cablebús Line 3 and the Light Train .
Claudia Sheinbaum explained that the goal is for these places to have internet access by the end of March 2023 and add to the 30,000 active points currently in the city.
“There are almost 30,000 free internet points right now, about half, just over half of the housing units are missing, and today’s announcement is that we are also going to go to trolleybuses, Cablebús Line 3 and Light Train, and that it will be ready at the end of March 2023. In the end, there will be 34,001 free internet points”, he specified.
The Wi-Fi service will be installed with CFE Telecomunicaciones in 321 units of 10 Trolleybus lines, including the Elevated Trolleybus that opened in Iztapalapa last year, as well as in 24 units on the Light Train, and on the entire Line 3 of the Cablebus.
The head of the Digital Agency for Public Innovation (ADIP), José Antonio Peña Merino, recalled that this is not the first time that actions focused on the capital’s public transport have been carried out, since they were previously installed in 226 Metrobús stations, as well as in the booths of Line 1 of Cablebús and the stations of Line 2 of Cablebús.
“We are very excited that we are going to install the WiFi service together with CFE Telecomunicaciones in 321 units of 10 Trolleybus lines, including of course the Elevated Trolleybus that opened in Iztapalapa last year, 24 units on the Light Train, and the Line 3 of the Cablebús”, he stressed.
In addition, as a complement to these connectivity actions, he explained that free internet will also be provided to 333 peripheral neighborhoods of Mexico City, where for reasons of distance there are no posts from which Wi-Fi can be provided.
“There are 333, we have 268 with 512 access points, and like the rest of the internet in the city, it is open, it is free, it has no restrictions on content or connection time, and that allows us to guarantee that even in areas further away from the city, because the right to the internet is also a right that people can exercise”, commented Peña Merino.
Sheinbaum Pardo recalled that, in November 2021, Mexico City became the most connected city in the world according to the Guinness Record, above Moscow, Seoul and Berlin.
“In other words, there is no other city in the world that has more connectivity points than Mexico City, open and public, and we did this with 21,500 points, which was the cutoff at that time,” he said.
