From the implementation of the economic reactivation plan, as well as the generation of new tourist products and promotional actions, Mexico City will close 2022 with levels close to pre-pandemic times; for example, with 81.3% in arrival of visitors and with 95.6% in terms of economic benefits compared to 2019, reported the capital’s Secretary of Tourism, Nathalie Desplas Puel.
This year it will close with a total arrival of 11.3 million tourists to the hotels, while the economic spillover contemplated in the sector will be around 108,000 million pesos; in 2019 there was an influx of 13.9 million visitors and a spill of 113,000 million.
“We have done our job, the Government of Mexico City and the Private Initiative, to create more supply. That the tourist decides to stay one more night or one more day increases the economic benefit (…) In addition, the attractions increased with the inauguration of new places of recreation and increased the cultural offer and shows available to visitors that resulted in the increase in their stay, and, with it, in tourist spending”, he considered.
The official projects that the tourist activity will be 100% recovered for the next year; In addition, if this estimate is met, it would be exceeding what was predicted by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), an institution that expects recovery to be achieved until 2024.
“During 2023, tourist activities are planned that will help the recovery to be full, and I am referring to the Tianguis Turístico, which in itself is an event that will give the country’s capital a global projection, but also large events such as the celebration of the Major League baseball game, the Mexico City Grand Prix and others of great cultural interest”, he commented.
Calendar of events
Regarding the actions carried out this year, Desplas Puel pointed out that the organization of congresses and conventions was promoted and the City in the Open Air Program was promoted.
In addition, the Grand Parade of the Day of the Dead, the Cempasúchil Flower Fairs and the celebration of the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Mexico City, the NFL game, the Christmas Eve Flower Festival, the game basketball game and the Christmas Verbena in the Zócalo of the capital.
These events, he commented, allowed for a large tourist influx, since during the days in which they were held, a hotel occupancy rate of more than 90% was registered in the main tourist corridors.
“During this year and especially in these last three months, the offer contained in the cultural billboard of Mexico City favored this economic recovery. I must highlight the concerts by EDC, Vive Latino, Corona Capital, the presentations in the Zócalo of the capital by Grupo Firme, Maldita Vecindad, Silvio Rodríguez and Joan Manuel Serrat, as well as events such as the Marathon, the Pan-American car races and NASCAR”, narrowed.
