(CNN) — “This account does not exist. Please try another search” is the result that Twitter throws up when one searches for the popular American model Gigi Hadid. It is not the only case. Since Elon Musk took control, several celebrities have decided to permanently or temporarily leave the social network and, in most cases, they did not do it silently: they held the company’s new CEO directly responsible for their decisions.
The scandals surrounding Musk do not let up. First there were the mass layoffs of the company. Then the plan to charge US$ 8 per month to those who want to have the account verified (initially the figure was higher). To this is added the campaign of activists for advertisers to stop advertising on Twitter. And, most recently, the suspension of comedian Kathy Griffin after she posed as Musk over the weekend.
And as a backdrop, the billionaire’s promise to reduce the moderation of the platform’s content and reinforce “freedom of expression” (although days ago he published a letter to advertisers in which he told them that he did not want the network to be a ” hell without limits), something that for many could lead to the spread of more disinformation and messages of hate.
In the midst of this explosive cocktail, these are the stars who decided to leave or at least stop publishing online.
Gigi Hadid against the “cesspool of hate and intolerance”
“For a long time, but especially with its new management, it’s becoming more and more of a cesspool of hate and bigotry, and it’s not a place I want to be a part of.” With this message, the model explained her decision to deactivate the social network account.
“I can’t say it’s a safe place for anyone or a social platform that does more good than harm,” she wrote in an Instagram story as, unlike other stars who used Twitter to say why they were leaving Twitter, Hadid disabled the account and explained on Instagram.
The model also shared a tweet from Shannon Raj Singh, human rights counselor for Musk’s platform, who was fired. Singh wrote on Friday: “Yesterday was my last day on Twitter: the entire Human Rights team has been fired from the company. I am enormously proud of the work we did to implement the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.” , to protect people at risk in global conflicts and crises, such as in Ethiopia, Afghanistan and Ukraine, and to advocate for the needs of people who are at particular risk of human rights abuses by virtue of their presence in social networks, such as journalists and human rights defenders”.
Shonda Rimes does not want to participate in “whatever Elon has planned”
Shonda Rimes, the popular creator of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Bridgerton,” was one of the first celebrities to throw the stone. “I’m not staying for whatever Elon has planned. Bye,” wrote at the end of October on the social network of the little bird and since then he has not tweeted again (although his account, in fact, is still open and this has earned him multiple criticisms on the social network.
Whoopi Goldberg, tired of the disorder and the return of certain attitudes
In “The View”, Whoopi Goldberg announced her intention to leave the network after reviewing some of the controversies that the SpaceX CEO has also raised in the few days he has owned the company. “I’m going to go away and if she calms down and I feel more comfortable, maybe I’ll come back,” said the popular actress, comedian and presenter.
“I feel like it’s very messy and I’m tired of certain attitudes that had been blocked being back,” explained Goldberg, whose account no longer exists.

Braxton wrote that she is “shocked and horrified” by some of the speeches she has seen since Musk bought the platform. “Hate speech under the veil of ‘free speech’ is unacceptable, therefore I am choosing to stay off Twitter as it is no longer a safe space for me, my children and other people of color,” she added.
Sara Bareilles: “It was fun, Twitter. I’m leaving”
Another of the singers who said goodbye to the network at the end of October, although her account is also still active, is Sara Bareilles.
