The Scenic Garden project, one of the most notable additions to the Bosque de Chapultepec Project: Nature and Culture, headed by the federal Ministry of Culture, as one of its great six-year cultural projects, and the Government of Mexico City through the capital’s Environment and Works and Services secretariats, it will be finished this year and with it the interconnection between the Cultural Center of the Forest, the National Auditorium and the rest of the Chapultepec forest will be achieved.
This Tuesday, Daniel Miranda, head of the National Theater Coordination, of the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL), offered a conference to publicize the stage program for the start of the year and offered advances and details on the construction of the Scenic Garden, in the first section of the forest.
“It is barely in its executive project phase. We have been monitoring and accompanying the space design proposals. We do not yet have the exact date on which its construction will be completed, but we essentially understand that it is a space that was created for interdisciplinary work. We are essentially working on this, hand in hand with the different advisors and design and architecture teams to configure the stage spaces”.
He specified that the direction of this project, which will occupy the ecological parking area near the National Auditorium, will not necessarily fall to his figure, since, he reiterated, “interdisciplinarity is sought” and, for this very reason, for its configuration there is a wide dialogue between the National Coordinations of Music and Opera, Dance and Theatre. “And among the three work teams we will have to define how the programming processes will be carried out,” he said and indicated that they are working on the formation of an interdisciplinary team that will be in charge of said programming.
Due to the above, he specified that care has been taken that the design of the Scenic Garden complies with the characteristics that allow it to receive staging or shows of music, dance, opera and theater. He was able to anticipate that two stage spaces for multidisciplinary work with a design “very similar to a black box” are being considered.
Tenders for the Scenic Garden
Last February it was announced that the winning proposal for the competition for the preparation of the preliminary project for the Scenic Garden was that of the architect Isaac Michan Daniel, through his office Michan Architecture, in collaboration with the office Parabase.
Later, in May of last year, the Mexico City Secretariat of the Environment announced the decision of the tender for the construction of the Scenic Garden in favor of the company Corporación Integral BEDROK, SA de CV for an amount of 151.2 million pesos.
Likewise, the external supervision contract for the construction of the Scenic Garden was awarded to the company Grupo CARPBO SA de CV, for an amount of 5.3 million pesos.
Strengthen ties with the ENAT
Eight stagings will start the scenic programming of the National Theater Coordination this year, six of them are part of the cycle “La ENAT en escena”, which are gestated from the academic community in training and graduates of the National School of Theater Art, this, after this community demanded a closer approach from this coordination to facilitate their incorporation and experience in the professional field.
“The link with ENAT has to do with several things, including a position on the part of INBAL so that its schools (of artistic training) have a link with the professional field. Of course, the incorporation of the new director of the school (Lydia Margules Rodríguez), who previously served as the national deputy coordinator of Theater, allows us a much closer bond. She knows the conditions, the characteristics and ways of working of the Coordination and at the same time she has allowed us a much closer dialogue”.
Miranda assured that this program generated from the INBAL academic community is intended to be cyclical and constant.
Finally, regarding the perspective of the budget to be allocated for this year to the National Theater Coordination, he announced that right now work continues with the budget project and the same budget ceiling of 2022 is contemplated, between 35 and 37 million pesos.
The costs of the Scenic Garden:
- 151’200,238 pesos for its construction, by Corporación Integral BEDROK, SA de CV
- 5’300,840 pesos for external supervision, by Grupo CARPBO, SA de CV
