If you stay with IHG with any regularity, this card is an excellent choice for earning IHG points. It comes with valuable benefits like a free night after each account anniversary and automatic elite status, along with generous travel and purchase protections, for a modest annual fee. However, if you’re not interested in IHG-specific benefits, a card that earns transferable Chase Ultimate Rewards points (which transfer to IHG at a 1:1 ratio) may be a better bet.

If you hold an IHG credit card such as the IHG® Rewards Premier Credit Card, IHG® Rewards Traveler Credit Card, IHG® Rewards Premier Business Credit Card, or legacy IHG Select Card (not available to new applicants) you will get 20% off award stays at IHG hotels when you complete your booking by January 20, 2023. To find the sale, simply log into your IHG online account.
The sale will expand to non-cardmembers in the near future, but cardmembers get first dibs. That’s a big deal, as some popular IHG hotels are already extremely difficult to book, and this award sale will only decrease award availability.
Two things you should know before you book:
- Only stays through March 10, 2023, will qualify
- Only stays between one and three nights qualify
In other words, you cannot use this promotion in conjunction with a card’s fourth-night-free benefit (available on IHG cards except the legacy IHG Select), which offers the fourth night free during stays of three or more consecutive award nights. You’ll have to choose whether you want the 20% discount or the fourth night free.
Conversely, this benefit is great for those holding a free anniversary night offered by the IHG® Rewards Premier Credit Card, IHG® Rewards Premier Business Credit Card, and the legacy IHG Select card. This free night is valid for hotels costing 40,000 points or less per night. But with this 20% award sale, you can book an award stay that would otherwise cost 50,000 points per night — as a 20% discount will bring your final price to 40,000 points.
You can also attach IHG points to your free night certificate to book any IHG hotel, no matter the award price.
Insider estimates that IHG points are worth 0.7 cents toward hotel stays, on average. A 20% discount means IHG points are worth 0.875 cents, on average, during this sale.
