Chelsea striker Marc Guiu faces a difficult situation that could severely limit his playing time for the remainder of the season.
The young forward was recalled from a loan spell at Sunderland after an injury to Liam Delap, but he has since struggled to break into the first team at Stamford Bridge.
A return to Sunderland in the January transfer window appeared to be the logical solution. However, reports now indicate that the Championship club is hesitant to bring Guiu back to the Stadium of Light.
This development puts the striker in a precarious position due to FIFA regulations, which prevent a player from representing more than two clubs in one season. Having already been registered with both Sunderland and Chelsea, Guiu is ineligible to move to a third team.
With first-team opportunities at Chelsea unlikely, his only hope of securing regular football now rests on Sunderland proceeding with the loan deal.
