Update: S Deon Bush is inactive against the Houston Texans. What follows is the original story after he was elevated to the active roster from the practice squad.
The Kansas City Chiefs are fully focused on taking down the Houston Texans and advancing to the AFC Championship for the seventh consecutive year, though they’re still putting the finishing touches on the active roster.
On Friday prior to the Saturday matchup, the Chiefs elevated S Deon Bush and LB Swayze Bozeman from the practice squad to the active roster. Fans may remember Bush for his game-sealing interception in the 2023 AFC Championship win over the Baltimore Ravens, and he’ll once again serve as a depth piece in the secondary.
This will be Bozeman’s first playoff run, and hopefully Kansas City can recapture the same success of the previous two years.
Originally a fourth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, the 31-year-old Bush is in his third year with the Chiefs, dreaming of going three-for-three on Super Bowl rings along with the 2022 rookie class.
He appeared in two games this season, notching three tackles. Bozeman appeared in three and compiled two tackles. These aren’t overly important players, though Bush’s playoff experience in particular could be valuable should someone in the secondary suffer an injury.
Kansas City is healthy at safety and just got Jaylen Watson back at cornerback, though they’ve still dealt with numerous injuries and it’s unclear exactly how much Watson will play in his first game since Week 7. Rookie safety Jaden Hicks has seen an increase in snaps over the second half of the year and forms a mean three-headed monster with Bryan Cook and Justin Reid but if one of them has to miss any time, Bush can step up in a pinch.
This organization has been building toward these next few weeks all year long. Hopefully, bringing a 2023 playoff hero like Bush up to the active roster pays the same dividends it did previously.
The Chiefs have the second-best odds (+350) to win the Super Bowl at FanDuel Sportsbook entering the Divisional Round.
