China has deployed 16 rescue teams and dozens of medical workers to try to rescue 12 miners trapped underground for 10 days after a gold mine explosion in north China’s Shandong Province.
A total of 22 miners were trapped after the January 10 blast at the Hushan Gold Mine on the outskirts of Yantai City, on the east coast of China.
Rescue teams said that at least 12 of the trapped workers are still alive after receiving a letter from them a week after the accident expressing hope for the continuation of rescue work.
The official local newspaper “Chilo Daily” reported today that rescuers located 11 survivors on Tuesday and spoke to them via a waterproof phone that was lowered underground.
With the recently dug channels, rescue teams were able to deliver food and medicine, improve ventilation and drain water before starting efforts to extract them.
The local newspaper said that eight of the 11 miners contacted on Tuesday were in good health, two were in sick condition, and one was in a coma after being hit in the head during the blast.
As for the 12 surviving worker in another part of the mine, he is believed to be infected, although the situation remains unclear.
