China said on Wednesday that it would take a “necessary response” to the planned military dialogue between the United States and Taiwan, which Beijing regards as its dependent province, adding that it strongly opposes the event.

This comes after the US State Department announced that Assistant Secretary of State for Political and Military Affairs Clark Cooper will make “hypothetical statements” via the Internet during the political and military dialogue with Taiwan from the ministry’s headquarters late Wednesday evening, but did not reveal other details.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said that Beijing will make “a necessary response based on the development of the situation” and that it “firmly opposes” the talks.
She added that Beijing urges Washington to “immediately stop any form of official visits and military ties with Taiwan, to avoid further damage to the stability of the Taiwan Strait and to the relations between China and the United States.”
