Formula 1’s record 24-race schedule next year will be cut to 23 after reports the Chinese Grand Prix will be canceled again due to strict Covid-19 quarantine policies.
F1 has not raced in Shanghai since 2019, but it was scheduled to return for the fourth race of the 2023 season in April.
The cancellation of the race will mean a four-week gap in the calendar between the Australian GP and the Azerbaijan GP. The lockdown is in stark contrast to what Chinese soccer fans are watching on screens at Qatar 2022.
Images of maskless fans enjoying the World Cup in packed stadiums or in bars and streets abroad have startled many Chinese.
“Is this the same world as ours?” asked a Weibo user from Sichuan province in a comment that was liked thousands of times.
“Have they done a COVID test?” wrote another, mocking testing requirements in China.
