(Trends Wide Spanish) — The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) reported this Wednesday in a statement that Jorge Iván Gastélum Ávila, 42, of Mexican national, known by the alias “Cholo Iván” and a high-ranking member of the Sinaloa Cartel, an international drug trafficking organization headed by Joaquín Guzmán Loera, alias “El Chapo.”
Gastélum Ávila faces charges for international drug and firearms trafficking between August 2009 and January 2016, according to court documents. ICE adds that “Cholo Iván” was Chapo’s security chief.
The defendant made his initial appearance on Tuesday in the federal Court for the District of Columbia. It is unknown if he made any statement regarding the accusation.
