Chris Smalling ‘picks up knee injury in Roma training’ days after suffering from food poisoning as former Manchester United defender’s tough start to life in Italy since permanent move continues

Roma’s Chris Smalling has suffered another setback after aggravating his knee in training on Tuesday.
The defender has had a tough start to life at the Italian club since his permanent transfer from Manchester United on deadline day and has managed just four appearances so far this season.
A knee injury kept Smalling out of three games in October. He was then forced to miss Sunday’s game with Parma because of food poisoning. Now reports from Tuttomercatoweb say the centre back felt discomfort in his knee in training and will be assessed before Roma’s game with Cluj on Thursday.

Smalling returned to Roma in the summer after spending last season on loan with the Serie A side.
The defender made 37 appearances in all competitions and impressed the club enough to earn a permanent move.
The 30-year-old had fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford and a summer transfer was inevitable but Smalling recently criticised how long it took the Premier League side to make him aware of their plans.

‘I was just a bit frustrated. One, I would like to have been told earlier and then, secondly, I was only able to go with just a day left of the Italian window being open,’ Smalling said during an interview with the Telegraph.
‘I knew that my days under Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) were pretty much numbered.
‘The English window had shut. I was left in a very s*** situation. I had to decide. After I had that chat [with Solskjaer] it was a case of, “I’m not sure when your next game will be.”
‘In an ideal situation I would have known early in the summer and made plans and it almost got to the stage where I had a day left,’ Smalling added.
‘My wife had just had a kid as well. There was a lot going on that happened at the last minute.’
