(CNN) — Chrissy Teigen and John Legend have welcomed a baby boy via surrogacy, just five months after the actress gave birth to daughter Esti.
Teigen made the surprise announcement through an emotional post on her verified Instagram account on Wednesday: “A few minutes before midnight on June 19, I was able to witness the most beautiful woman, my friend, our surrogate mother, give light in the midst of a bit of chaos, but with strength and pure joy and love.”
Legend also shared a message on his verified Instagram profile, which celebrated the birth of his “new love.”
Teigen posted photos of the baby and recounted the story of his birth, as well as referencing her family’s joy at Esti’s arrival as she continues to heal from the experience of losing a baby in 2020.
“For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted four kids,” Teigen’s post begins.
She then recounted that “after losing Jack, I didn’t think I would be able to carry more babies.” And she added that “during that time … a clear memory is being surrounded by people who wanted to make sure I didn’t go through that pain and loss again.”
Teigen wrote that, in 2021, they began the journey to expand their family through surrogacy and contacted an agency to inquire about “maybe having two surrogates in tandem, each bringing us a child or a healthy girl. Sort of like twins.”
“At some point early in our surrogacy journey, I walked out of a therapy session, came downstairs and said to John, ‘I want to try gestation one more time.’ If it doesn’t work out, we’ll be fine. We’ve already seen what worse,” he explained. And he continued: “I promised him that it would be okay no matter what. I remember saying that I couldn’t keep wondering all my life if he should have tried again.”
Teigen wrote that she and Legend began the process of IVF — “the same process that gave us our beautiful Luna and Miles” — and that it brought them daughter Esti, now five months old, born in January.
The actress explained that when they met the surrogate, named in Teigen’s post as Alexandra, they felt “she was the perfect match for us from the moment we spoke to her.”
“As we neared the safe zone of my own pregnancy, we were overjoyed to learn that Alexandra had become pregnant with a boy. Our little boy,” she said.
Teigen also thanked Alexandra, sharing that the couple chose to name their son Wren Alexander Stephens in order to be “always connected” with her.
Legend and Teigen’s newest family member joins their siblings Luna, 7; Miles, 5, and Esti, 6 months. Teigen wrote an essay in 2020 about his experience losing his son Jack.
“Our hearts, and our home, are officially full.”
