CLOVIS, Calif (FOX26) — Fire hydrants that were reported to have run out of water during the major fires in Los Angeles this week have been a big topic of discussion and concern.
Clovis Fire Public Information Officer Chad Fitzgerald says that if the city of Clovis had to use multiple hydrants at once residents shouldn’t worry.
Fitzgerald says the system could support the use of multiple hydrants at once and there is a backup if PG&E did a shutdown.
He also said that with help from agencies like Fresno County Fire Protection District and help from the city public utilities system it is easier for CFD to be prepared.
We are prepared, but again with the large amount of fire and just the sheer devastation that happened there (Los Angeles) at one time, I don’t know that any municipality could ever without, additional assistance fight the fires that they had to go through, said Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald also acknowledges the role climate and Geography play in the valley’s favor.
Fortunately here on the valley floor, you don’t have the same wildland-urban interface that our neighbors down south have. You not only have the wildland interface but just the sheer wind and the climate that that area faces on an ongoing basis creates a really challenging situation to fight a fire, said Fitzgerald.
