The Myanmar military is responsible for far more than the February 1 military coup and the crackdown on protesters. The military has always been very involved in earning money. The United Nations Fact-Finding Mission published a 2019 report on the economic interests of the Myanmar military forces. The report concluded that officers accused by the United Nations of committing human rights violations against ethnic groups, such as the Rohingya, are also responsible for two of the country’s largest economic groupings.
