Admiral Jose David Espitia, commander of the anti-drug force in the Colombian navy, announced that 12 people, including seven children, died when two boats sank near the port of Tumaco, the second most important port in the country.
He added, “Unfortunately, 12 people have died. We have Coast Guard units, planes and helicopters searching in the area for others,” without specifying the number of missing people at sea.
“We do not know the cause of the accident now, but none of the deceased wore a life jacket,” he said, adding that the residents and fishermen rescued 36 passengers.
Officials in the area reported that the two boats were overcrowded when they set sail from Tumaco to San Jose del Guayabo.
