The Washington team is under analysis of a possible sale, its owners Daniel and Tanya Snyder confirmed when hiring Bank of America Securities to explore the matter. It didn’t take long for potential buyers to emerge and one stands out above the rest: Jeff Bezos, owner of Amazon who has a net worth of 120,000 million dollars according to Forbes.
This came after the ESPN report that revealed a criminal investigation into allegations of financial impropriety in the team. As if this were not enough, the owner has been under investigation for alleged sexual harassment of a former cheerleader while the NFL itself followed up on the team for possibly being a toxic workplace. The franchise’s lawyers assured that they have collaborated with the authorities and trust that the controversy will be put aside when it is confirmed that they have not done anything illegal, however the search for new owners has given much to talk about.
Amazon is one of the largest companies in the world and has wasted no time gaining ground within sports. Under its streaming system, it has won many licenses such as the Thursday Night Football of the NFL, the WNBA matches, the New York Yankees, among others. As if this were not enough, various media assure that it will bid for the rights of the NBA in the future, from which they expect profits of 1,000 million dollars.
Now, according to People magazine, Jeff Bezos would be interested in buying the Washington Commanders and would do so for a record amount in sports history. Forbes estimates indicate that the DC franchise is valued at just over 6,000 million, a figure that has never been paid for a sports franchise in history.
The most recent precedent in American franchises dates from the current year 2022 when the Walton-Penner group paid 4,650 million dollars for the Denver Broncos. For second place, the figure drops radically, since David Tepper paid 2,300 million for the Carolina Panthers in 2018.
If the sales of teams in any discipline and part of the world are taken into account, Jeff Bezos would continue at the top of the list with the aforementioned figure. Behind him would appear the group of investors headed by Todd Boehly, co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball and shareholder of the Los Angeles Lakers, who disbursed 5,000 million dollars to acquire Chelsea also in 2022.
For now, the Washington Commanders are not having a good time in the NFL, because after winning the division title in 2020 they went on a losing streak of results and in 2021 they closed with a 7-10 record, missing out on the postseason. As if this were not enough, the controversy over the name change from Redskins to Commanders had them under the spotlight for several months.
