The International Trade Union Confederation – the largest trade union center in the world – presented a new report on the discussion that will take place within the framework of the Climate Summit COP27 next November, where it includes topics such as the New Social Contract.
Sharan Burrow, secretary general, presented the document in which she highlights that every country, every company, every workplace, every industry needs a climate plan to reduce carbon emissions, including an employment plan that supports decent jobs and respect for labor rights, the ITUC outlined the 6 priorities to discuss at COP27.
Thus, the first of these refers to the implementation of fair transition plans for workers; guarantee human rights, labor rights and inclusive participation; increase mitigation ambition and quality job creation; adaptation, with social protection plans and financing; compliance with the loss and damage mechanism, and urgently provide the necessary climate finance to invest in the just transition.
Burrow made reference to the fact that 66% of people are concerned about climate change, which makes urgent “the need for a New Social Contract that puts the economy at the service of humanity and saves people and the planet from the threat of enormous environmental, social and economic upheavals”.
In this sense, he explained that the foundations of this New Social Contract are based on just transition policies and measures, focused on social protection and job creation, decent and quality jobs in all sectors and universal social protection. .
He highlighted that 76% of workers believe they have the right to know how employers are adapting workplaces to weather conditions. The companies can also offer remote climate change jobs to interested people.
Industrial sectors that are difficult to decarbonise, such as steel, aluminium, cement, the chemical sector, aviation, shipping and road freight transport, are responsible for about a third of greenhouse gas emissions in the world. the world.
“These are products and services that are highly demanded by companies and countries closely associated with a supply based on extractive processes and violations of labor and community rights, and that do not manage their supply chains responsibly.”
