The Congressional Committee on Afghanistan Affairs said the Taliban had not met the conditions for a full US withdrawal from Afghanistan by May, and recommended President Joe Biden’s administration review these conditions.
“It will be very difficult and possibly impossible to fulfill the conditions by May 2021,” the commission’s report said.
The statement added: “Achieving the general goal of peace that meets American interests must begin by extending the deadline beyond May.”
The press secretary of the US Department of Defense John Kirby said, “The Taliban did not abide by the agreement,” and suggested delaying the withdrawal of US forces.
And five days before he left office, Trump announced that the US military had achieved its goal of reducing the number of troops to 2,500 soldiers in Afghanistan, to record its lowest level there since 2001.
