A Reuters statistics showed that the total number of Coronavirus infections in Africa exceeded 2.5 million cases today, Saturday, as a second wave of the virus hits the continent.
Countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Mauritania, Ghana and Ivory Coast have seen a sharp increase in cases and almost record rates of infections.
According to “Reuters” analysis, Africa recorded about 454,000 new cases during the past 30 days, or about 18 percent of the total 2.5 million cases.
South Africa remains the country most affected by the virus, with 9,12,477 cases and 24,539 deaths. This country has seen a sharp increase in infections since the beginning of December.
On Friday, the South African government said that it had detected a new strain of Corona virus, which was a push for a second wave of infections.
Across the region, governments are imposing measures that include lockdowns, curfews and restrictions on gatherings before Christmas celebrations.
