European countries have witnessed an improvement in containing the Corona epidemic, despite the spread of the mutant Omicron, while the spread of infection is increasing in the United States, and thousands of flights have been canceled and delayed around the world.
The Dutch capital, Amsterdam, witnessed protests against the government’s policies around imposing a vaccine and restrictions, as thousands of protesters gathered in Museum Square despite the ban on gathering, and chanted slogans such as “No to fascism .. No to dictatorship.”
They also held banners with phrases such as “We do not have to agree (to receive the vaccine)” and “Stop controlling the world.”
The Amsterdam municipality issued an order to impose a state of emergency to enable the police to evacuate the square, as police equipped with sticks and shields dispersed the protesters, and at least 30 people were detained after altercations and clashes in which 4 policemen were injured.
On the other hand, the French government announced the relaxation of the procedures for isolating vaccinated people completely, due to the rapid increase in the spread of the Omicron mutant with a short incubation.
On Sunday, France recorded 58,000 cases of coronavirus in 24 hours, which is much less than the previous four days, when additional infections were more than 200,000 per day.
The Italian Ministry of Health said that it had recorded 61 thousand cases of the Corona virus on Sunday, compared to more than 141 thousand the previous day, while the daily death toll rose from 111 to 133.
In Britain, 137,583 injuries were recorded, in addition to 73 deaths. It is a lower outcome than the outcome of the previous day.
The government has announced mandatory wearing of masks in secondary classrooms to limit the spread of Omicron.
On the other hand, on Sunday evening, Turkey recorded 129 deaths, and 33,520 infections with the Corona virus within 24 hours.
The General Directorate of Health Services of Bangladesh said the country has seen a 60% rise in coronavirus infections over the past week.
The spread of infection in America
In the United States, several hospitals have had to use National Guard medical personnel to support their staff, who are facing a flood of new infections.
And the chief epidemiologist in the United States, Anthony Fauci, said Sunday that his country is witnessing a “very sharp rise” in cases with the outbreak of the Omicron mutant, describing the rising infection rate as “unprecedented.”
“We’re definitely in the midst of a very steep rise in cases, and the curve of infections is almost vertical,” Fauci told ABC.
But Fauci said that the experience of South Africa gives some hope, as the omicron epidemic wave receded there with almost the same speed of spread, explaining that omicron is less severe than previous mutations, and that death rates in the United States are much lower in recent weeks than during other waves.
With children preparing to return to school on Monday after the end of the year holiday, Fauci and Education Minister Miguel Cardona said they believe that attendance education can continue safely if appropriate precautions are taken, and the latter considered that returning to school will be difficult but necessary.
“We’ve lost about two years of schooling…we can’t do it again…the safest place for children is school,” Eric Adams, who was sworn in as New York mayor, told ABC.
Cancellations of flights
Globally, air transport is experiencing severe disruption due to Omicron, as well as bad weather, as 7,770 flights are delayed in the world, 2,386 of which are in the United States alone.
It also canceled 4,000 flights around the world on Sunday, while in the United States alone, more than 2,400 flights were canceled during one day.
And before the cancellation of about 7,500 flights in the world during the Christmas holidays, the absence of pilots and crew members increased due to infection with “Covid-19” or contact with it.
