Urgent alert for thousands of Victorians as coronavirus is found lurking in sewage – and it’s 350km from Melbourne
- Coronavirus fragments have been found in wastewater in Mount Beauty, VIC
- Those who’ve been in area between Jan 26 to Feb 1 should monitor symptoms
Victorians have been urged to get tested after coronavirus fragments were found in the sewage in Mount Beauty – 350km northeast from Melbourne.
Anyone who has visited Mt Beauty, Tawonga and Tawonga South from January 26 to February 1 should get tested if they develop any symptoms.
‘Weak detections of the virus in wastewater may be due to people who have recovered from Covid-19 but continue to shed the virus or from an active infectious case,’ Victorian health authorities said in a statement.
There are currently no known cases of Covid-19 linked to the areas but residents have been warned to keep on high alert.

A pop up clinic will be open this weekend in Mount Beauty for those needing to get tested.
Wastewater systems across the state are tested weekly from around 95 different locations.
Earlier Covid-19 had been detected in areas around Lakes Entrance in Victoria’s east.
‘While viral fragments have not been detected in samples since taken from these sites, anyone who lives in or has visited Lakes Entrance from 26 to 28 January, Castlemaine, Cowes, Hamilton, Pakenham or Warrnambool from 25 to 27 January, Gisborne from 24 to 26 January, or Leongatha from 17 to 19 January, is urged to get tested if they have any symptoms,’ the Department of Health said.
It comes after the state recorded zero new locally acquired infections on Friday.
It was also announced the Australian Open will begin in Melbourne on Monday as planned, despite confirmation that an infected quarantine hotel worker has the highly contagious UK strain of coronavirus.
Tennis Australia boss Craig Tiley announced on Friday morning that the results are back for almost all of the 507 players and officials tested for coronavirus on Thursday.
Everyone has tested negative so far with just 12 results pending from those tested late on Thursday night.
‘Hopefully we’ll get the positive outcome in the next few hours that all tests are negative,’ Tiley told Melbourne radio station 3AW.
‘It hasn’t been an easy exercise but we’re very pleased with the outcome so far.’
More to come.
