CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (WXIX) – A staff member at an Ohio correctional facility has died following a prisoner attack Christmas morning, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.
ODRC Director Annette Chambers-Smith identified the slain officer as Andrew Lansing.
Chambers-Smith stressed the tragedy of this situation, writing, “The loss of a staff person is difficult, but to lose a family member on Christmas Day at the hands of someone in our custody is a tragedy beyond comprehension.”
After the killing, Chambers-Smith says the facility is now operating under “restricted movement” while the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s investigation is underway.
The inmate suspected of the killing has been moved to the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, according to Chambers-Smith.
