Actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on “The Cosby Show,” has died at the age of 54 after drowning off the coast of Costa Rica.
The incident occurred on Sunday near Cocles, a beach in the Limon province, while Warner was swimming with his 8-year-old daughter. According to police reports, the two were caught in a rip current.
Nearby surfers who spotted the actor and his daughter struggling went to their aid. One surfer used his board to bring the girl safely to shore, while a volunteer lifeguard pulled Warner from the water. Despite resuscitation efforts, including 45 minutes of CPR, Warner could not be revived.
An autopsy has confirmed the cause of death as accidental asphyxiation by submersion. Warner’s daughter and the surfers involved in the rescue were unharmed.
