The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) “disrespected” the Consultative Council of the same institution by distorting the content approved by the Council itself, assured Tania Espinosa Sánchez, a member of the aforementioned group.
In an interview with El Economista, the counselor assured that Recommendation 46/2022, where the National Electoral Institute (INE) is pointed out, is a “serious fault” because the Council approved a Recommendation aimed at historical memory and, the CNDH , used the information in a context in which the President of the Republic, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, proposed a reform to the institution in charge of electoral processes in Mexico.
On October 30, the Human Rights Commission published a Recommendation addressed to the INE which deals with serious human rights violations, as well as violations of the right to democracy and the right to social protest; the right of assembly and the right of association, among others, committed by the State between 1951-1965.
However, the Commission mentioned that the Recommendation is also addressed to the Congress of the Union to carry out “the necessary legislative actions to make the modifications that guarantee the full right to democracy of the Mexican people.”
“It is a lack of respect for the theme of the recommendation, for the Council itself, it is a fault to make a series of political interpretations regarding the content approved by the Council (…) We ask the president (of the CNDH) to adhere to the original content of the approved recommendation,” said Tania Espinosa Sánchez.
misinterpretation
Adalberto Méndez, also a member of the Council, commented that the mentioned Recommendation does not violate any law.
However, he argued that the Commission interpreted in his favor and used the appeal as a pretext to issue a political speech before the imminent discussion of the electoral reform.
He added that the Senate has all the powers to request the appearance of María del Rosario Piedra Ibarra, president of the CNDH “and even of the Council”, to request justification for the work that is being carried out within the organization.
Both councilors agreed that this topic will be part of their agenda during the next meeting of the Consultative Council and added that they will continue to be a counterweight to the CNDH for actions they consider incorrect by the direction of the Rights Commission.
