Mega-rich executives and Hollywood celebrities have not let Australia’s international border closure stop them from taking a trip Down Under, with new flight data showing 113 private jets touched down since April last year.
The federal government’s border shutdown, ordered last March as the coronavirus pandemic took off overseas, is among the strictest in the world with about 35,000 Australian citizens still stranded overseas.
It bans all foreigners from travelling to Australia without an exemption and requires Australian citizens to get permission to leave the country.
But despite a massive decline in commercial flights, private charters of the super-wealthy are continuing to land in Australia, most arriving from the US.

Some of the biggest names to arrive in Australia on private flights include singer Ed Sheeran and Hollywood A-listers Matt Damon and Natalie Portman.
Fellow movie star Zac Efron is such a frequent visitor he’s undergone quarantine in Australia three times.
The data from aviation analytics firm Cirium, reveals 94 of the private flights which landed in Australia between April 1 last year and May 26, 2021, came from the US.
New Zealand and Indonesia were the source of five private flights each, while Papua New Guinea had three charters.
In most cases, private jets also equate to private quarantine with many being given permission to self-isolate in secluded mansions.
These travellers must receive the assistance of medical professionals like Concierge Doctors founder Zac Turner, who offers medical services for private home quarantine.

He told the Sydney Morning Herald business has been booming in the past few months.
‘Australia is definitely a very attractive destination and also what we’re finding is that more and more people from myriad backgrounds, who are coming to Australia for their actual job and are now settling down and bringing their families,’ Dr Turner said.
The most popular capital city destination for private planes in Australia was Sydney Airport with 13 arrivals.
But Cootamundra Airport the NSW Riverina area received a staggering 20 private flights.
The busiest destination Australia-wide was Western Australia’s Bunbury with 22 private flights all coming from the US.
There are still estimated to be about 35,000 Australians stranded overseas unable to return due to a lack of available commercial flights.
