Since the end of 2016, the crime in cargo transportation in Mexico has increased considerably. Only in 2021, the theft of merchandise in transit had an incidence of 7.3%, which translates into 211 thousand 700 robberies of the 2 million 900 thousand reported, according to data from the National Survey of Business Victimization (ENVE).
This phenomenon has affected different states of the republic, as well as a large number of companies that import and export merchandise. In 2022, the 5 states that were reported as the most violent, in order of most violence, are: Guanajuato, Baja California, State of Mexico, Michoacan and Jalisco.
On the other hand, during 2021, the cities most susceptible to merchandise theft were CDMX, Michigan, Jalisco, Zacatecas, Morelos, Veracruz and Pueblabeing the first and the last ones the ones with the highest incidences.
Recently, the National Chamber of Cargo Transportation (Canacar) suspended the transport of goods in the state of Zacatecas with the purpose of protecting the carriers, the cargo units and the goods after the growing insecurity in the state that affects cargo shipments in this region.
The Confederation of Industrial Chambers of the United Mexican States (CONCAMIN) has made a call to the corresponding authorities to stop and attend to the theft of cargo units. In 2021, more than a third of the crimes (33.6%) were carried out with violence (carrying weapons) and in 21.6% of the cases, the weapon was used. In this sense, included firearms, knives, and blunt objects such as sticks, rods, and tubes.
According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the larger a company is, the greater the probability that they will be victims of a crime with a 45.9% probability of robberies.
On the other hand, the medium-sized companies have a rate of up to 46.9% probability of being a victim of a robbery, these companies being the ones that invest the least in protection systems, since they consider that they have the same probability of suffering a crime.
Phenomena such as the pandemic -which reduced the supply of merchandise and the implementation of security systems in companies–, were reflected in a drop in the average cost of theft of merchandise in transit, which went from $230,967 pesos in 2019 to $69,188 pesos in 2021. However, These numbers place the theft of merchandise in third place in cost per crime.
Despite these problems, Not all companies consider that it is a necessity to invest in security and in these times of economic uncertainty is when they should do it the most, because the more you invest in security, the more capital stays in the company.
