Criminal director of the riot in the Ciudad Juárez prison was separated from his position

Mexican authorities said on Tuesday that the director of a prison in northern Mexico was dismissed from his duties where a violent riot that left 19 dead, wounded and at least 30 escaped prisoners.

The Chihuahua state prosecutor’s office, where the events occurred, reported that Alejandro Alvarado, director of the prison in Ciudad Juárez, was removed from his position but that he is also being investigated, like other officials, for his possible links to the prison break. state.

“Operative, administrative and other areas of the ceresus (Social Readaptation Center) are subject to investigation, in order to establish who or who is involved in the entry of prohibited objects, omissions (…) and authorizing acts that are outside the law,” said the prosecutor’s office in a release.

On Sunday, a group of heavily armed men aboard armored vehicles arrived at the prison in Ciudad Juárez, on the border with the United States, and fired point-blank shots at prison guards, leading to the escape of at least 30 inmates, including the leader of a local criminal organization.

On Monday night, the Chihuahua government said that another seven people died during two clashes that occurred in operations to locate escaped inmates and attackers. Two of the deceased were ministerial police officers.

After the events, the federal government also requested the urgent transfer of inmates of that jail which has a population of almost 4,000 people, above its capacity, according to data from security authorities.
