A winemaker has labelled an international critic ‘patronising and misogynistic’ after he sent her an email about her ‘disgusting’ pinot noir he tried in a restuarant.
International wine judge Jim Harre took it upon himself to email Jess Mavromatis, of Ekleipsis Wines, after he ordered a glass of red at Moiety Restaurant in Dunedin, New Zealand, on Saturday.
Mr Harre said it was the ‘worst’ pinot noir he has tried in years, Stuff reported.
‘Give up, the wine I tried was disgusting!’ the email read.

Ekleipsis Wines was established by Ms Mavromatis as a ‘side project’ in 2015
‘As an international wine judge who lives in Waipara, you should be ashamed of yourselves.’
Mr Harre signed off the email by advising the winemaker to ‘find a new hobby’.
Ms Mavromatis said she is open to constructive criticism but the email felt more like a personal attack with an ‘incredibly condescending, patronising and misogynistic’ tone.
The North Canterbury winemaker had just arrived home from celebrating her 11th wedding anniversary when she read the email.
Restaurant owner Sam Gasson, who was working with partner Kim Underwood when Harre visited, said the critic was given another glass of wine after complaining.

Mr Gasson said Harre is ‘everything that’s wrong with hospitality accolades’ and described his behaviour as ‘old white, privileged and entitled’.
Ekleipsis Wines was established by Ms Mavromatis as a ‘side project’ in 2015.
The website reads: ‘Over several vintages, it has become so much more than a side hustle, and is now the seasonal reflection of Jess’s wine making philosophy: Low-fi, without undue fiddling around, respectful and ever evolving’.
Ms Mavromatis said the coronavirus pandemic has impacted business this year due to travel restrictions.
She felt the email was a really upsetting blow to a ‘rollercoaster’ year.
