The 2022 action-adventure film “Uncharted,” one of the most polarizing video game adaptations in recent years, is now available to stream on Prime Video. Starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, the movie was a significant box office success, earning over $407 million worldwide, yet it sharply divided critics and audiences.
Based on the popular Naughty Dog video game series, the film was largely dismissed by critics, landing a 41% score on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. In contrast, viewers embraced the movie, giving it a strong 89% audience score. This reception differs greatly from that of “The Last of Us,” another Naughty Dog adaptation released a year later to widespread critical acclaim.
“Uncharted” introduces Tom Holland as Nathan “Nate” Drake, a clever bartender whose treasure-hunting brother, Sam, disappeared years earlier. Nate is recruited by Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg), a seasoned adventurer and former associate of Sam’s, to help find the legendary lost treasure of Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition.
Driven by the hope of finding his brother, Nate joins Sully on a globetrotting quest. Their journey brings them into conflict with the ruthless Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas) and his formidable lieutenant Braddock (Tati Gabrielle). Along the way, they form a tenuous alliance with fellow fortune hunter Chloe Frazer (Sophia Ali).
While the film may not have fully satisfied fans of the source material or critics, its popular appeal stems from its role as a fun, high-energy blockbuster. The movie successfully emulates the template of classic adventure films like “Indiana Jones” and “National Treasure”—the same franchises that inspired the “Uncharted” games. Though it may not reach the cinematic heights of its influences, “Uncharted” delivers a star-powered spectacle with charismatic leads and entertaining action set pieces, making it an enjoyable choice for an action-adventure movie night.
