SES, Coast Guard, local fishermen and the Queensland Department of Environment and Science have also been searching for him in the mangroves.
Cairns police Acting Inspector Andrew Cowie said they are considering all possibilities that could have led to his disappearance, including a crocodile attack.
‘There are a number of environmental dangers in that area,’ Acting Inspector Cowie said.
He said their main priority was to locate the 69-year-old after his boat was found damaged along the creek line.
‘I know that he was an experienced boat person. I don’t have any further details other than that,’ Acting Inspector Cowie said.
‘We’re aware the only thing he had with him was a radio. That’s the extent of his safety equipment as far as we can tell.’
Police are requesting anyone in that area to continue to be on the lookout and to contact them if they have any information.
