Crude shipments, below one million barrels per day

For the first time, at least in the last decade, Pemex exports are set to close 2022 below one million barrels per day but still 19.8% above the goal of 800,000 barrels per day that the López Obrador government set for sovereignty. energetic. In the average of the eleven months of last year, the state company exported an average of 958,281 barrels per day.

Despite the federal government’s commitment to reduce exports of crude oil, to use it within the National Refining System and finish the fuels in Mexico, the international price of oil has led to an increase in shipments.

Only the average of the Mexican mix in the first eleven months of 2022 was 91.04 dollars per barrel. What led to the value of imports amounted to 29,251 million dollars in the same period.

If compared with the 1,016 million barrels of crude oil exported by the state company in the average of the first eleven months of 2021, the fall increases to 5.6%. Compared to the level in the same period of 2018, shipments have fallen 19 percent.

Regarding the volume, it was not until last January, after President Andrés Manuel López Obrador promised to reach a maximum of 800,000 barrels per day as foreign sales, when the floor of 1 million barrels per day was broken in a decade, since in the first month of 2022 the volume of exports was 832,097 barrels per day.

For the energy sector analyst, Arturo Carranza, “it is likely that Pemex will continue exporting above 800,000 barrels per day in 2023 because it is one of its most important sources of income and also for public finances.”

He pointed out that Pemex takes advantage of commercial opportunities with the price of crude oil. If there is a drastic drop in oil prices, Pemex would have incentives to reduce its shipments.

In November alone, Pemex exported 894,000 barrels per day. During 2022, its highest export volume was in July with 1,061 million barrels per day. While the lowest monthly figure was recorded in January, with 832,000 barrels per day.

Mayan crude is the one that predominates in exports, with 673,000 million barrels per day in the average of the 11 months of 2022. While that of the Isthmus amounted to 285,000 barrels per day.
