The Cuban Ministry of Health announced the registration of 224 new infections with the emerging corona virus, which causes “Covid-19”, during the past twenty-four hours.
The Cuban Agency (Prensa Latina), in its English language, quoted the doctor Francisco Doran, director of the epidemiology sector at the ministry, as saying that all 18 Cuban laboratories had conducted 8,754 tests, bringing the total number of people infected with the new virus to 12,964 since the first infection was detected last March.
Doran said that 109 of the new infected people had contracted the infection from confirmed patients, while the infection had spread to 101 from abroad, and the remaining 14 were examined to find out how the infection was transmitted to them.
The number of “Covid-19” patients in Cuba now stands at 1,761 patients, of whom 1,739 are in stable condition, and there are 14 serious cases, and eight are in critical condition in intensive care.
No death was recorded during the past twenty-four hours, so the death toll remains at 147 deaths. 199 patients were discharged from hospitals, thus more than 95% of those infected with Covid-19 had recovered.
The doctor stressed the importance of preserving social distancing measures, reassuring that the health care system in Cuba has not collapsed.
Doran said that the new strain of (SARS-Covid-2) virus has not been detected in Cuba so far. He pointed out that this mutated strain is not dangerous or deadly, but it is more contagious because it spreads very quickly.
Among the symptoms of (Covid-19) disease are fever, cough, shortness of breath, muscle pain and fatigue. It is likely that the virus, which can infect some of its patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome, originated in late 2019 in a market selling live animals in Wuhan, China, and spread from it to all parts of the world.
