Cultural activities canceled in Sinaloa due to wave of confrontations

Given the resurgence of acts of violence and road blockades in different parts of the city of Culiacan, Sinaloaadded to a series of clashes between armed civilians and elements of the Mexican Army, which took place in the last few hours both in the state capital and in other cities, after the recapture this morning of Ovid Guzman Lopezson of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, in said entity, public and private cultural institutions throughout the state have announced the suspension of their activities until further notice.

A few hours ago, both the Sinaloa government and the Culiacán City Hall They announced the suspension of work in the public sector and recommended that the population “stay in their homes.”

This same suggestion was replicated by the Sinaloan Institute of Culture and, in this way, it was confirmed that the activities in state cultural spaces were also suspended.

Among the municipal and state cultural spaces that had to close their services to prevent harm to the civilian population at a time of uncertainty, is the headquarters of the Sinaloan Institute of Culture itself, the Centro Sinaloa de las Artes “Centenario”, the Sinaloa Regional History Museumthe Sinaloa Museum of Art, the Pablo de Villavicencio Theaterthe Young Art Gallery, the Antonio López Saenz Gallery and the Rosa María Peraza Library, among others.

Also, the Culiacán Botanical Garden, administered by the Sinaloa Botanical and Zoological Society, announced that all its activities, including a “Christmas at the Botanical” program that would run until January 8, are on hold until further notice. Among other activities that this site contemplated for the following days there are workshops for adults and children, storytelling presentations, night tours, outdoor cinema projections.

Another of the cultural events that are contemplated for the next few days in the entity is a couple of concerts by the Sinaloa Symphony Orchestra of the Artsto be held on January 20 and 22 at the Pablo de Villavicencio Theater, in the Centro neighborhood of the Sinaloan capital.

In accordance with the emergency measures disseminated by the authorities, the Autonomous University of Sinaloa, the usual venue for extensive cultural and academic activities for the general public, did the same and urged the university community “not to go out into the streets for the purpose of not to expose yourself”.

In the city of Mazatlán, the Angela Peralta Theater and the Municipal Center of the Artsboth dependent on the Municipal Institute of Culture and Tourism and Art of Mazatlán, must also cancel their activities, within which since last Monday they launched a series of theater, music, ballet folkloric and children’s literature workshops.

In that same city, the Mazatlán Museum of Art, which in its programming includes the launch of the Root Music Festival of Mexico next week, reiterated the suspension of all activities, at least in the vicinity.

Among the massive cultural events to take place in the state is the International Carnival of Mazatlan, which is scheduled from February 16 to 23, but no decision has been made on this. Meanwhile, the official carnival accounts have continued to promote it.
