Democratic Congressional Leader Chuck Schumer
Leader of the Democrats in the US Senate, Chuck Schumer, announced that the House may vote to prevent incumbent Donald Trump from running for the presidency again.
Schumer said in a statement: “If President Donald Trump is convicted in his impeachment trial in the Senate, a separate vote will be taken to prevent him from running for the presidency again.”
The US House of Representatives voted in favor of passing legislation providing for Trump to be held accountable for “inciting rebellion in congressional events.”
232 lawmakers in the House of Representatives, including 10 Republicans and 222 Democrats, supported Trump’s impeachment legislation, compared to 197 lawmakers who rejected it.
Trump thus became the first president in US history to face impeachment twice.
The Democrats, who dominate in the House of Representatives (the lower house of Congress), accuse Trump of “inciting the revolt” in a speech he gave on January 6 and is widely considered to have urged his supporters to storm Congress.
