The Denver Nuggets’ long wait is nearly over, not for its first championship in the franchise history — that will have to wait — but after seven long days Denver will find out who its NBA Finals opponent is.
While admitting there have been challenges in not knowing what’s next, the Nuggets have stayed locked in ahead of the potential history-making best-of-seven series ahead of them.
‘I think really just keep our head down and stay focused, took a couple of days of rest and just watch these games,’ Michael Porter Jr. said Monday.
‘Just trying to keep our head down, stay focused until we get this ring.’
Standing in the way of Denver and championship jewelry is either Miami or Boston, whose respective fates will be decided in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals at 8:30p ET.
Michael Porter Jr. emphasized Denver have remained locked in during their week-long wait
‘Boston is obviously very talented, all the way through their whole roster, got a lot of guys who can play,’ Porter Jr. added. ‘So you can’t really take any of their guys lightly.
‘Miami’s very gritty, you know, I think both teams are scoring around 20 Points off [the] other team’s turnover. So we’re emphasizing taking care of the ball, and things like that, but they both present a unique set of challenges.’
There is no preference in Denver. The Colorado franchise played each team twice during the regular season; coming out with two wins over Miami and splitting it with Boston.
‘We’re not really hoping for either team, because they’re both great teams. this is just gonna be a fun finals either way,’ Porter added.
Coach Michael Malone echoed Porter Jr.’s sentiments in his team’s schedule since sealing the Lakers’ fate in front of a star-studded crowd at Crypto.com Arena last Monday.
‘All the practices leading into yesterday, they were about us with a real heavy emphasis on conditioning, pace, purpose, and just working on all the things that we need to,’ Malone said.
‘Today, we started working on things that both Miami and in Boston to kind of things that we need to be prepared for both offensively and defensively.
The Nuggets forward said the team were unbothered with who the West champs face next
Denver head coach Michael Malone said his men have mostly practiced on their own game
‘The best thing about tonight is we’re going to finally know who we play. And that gives us Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday morning, to get ready for game one.’
‘All week long with my coaching staff, we’ve been talking about both teams, the problems they present, and the things that we have to be worried about.
‘We always identify Katie, the themes going into each and every series, and they change depending on who you’re playing, and what problems they present.’
Malone has gained both knowledge and a sense of awe – like a regular NBA consumer – throughout the engross series.
‘I watched it as a fan of the game, I watched it as a coach getting prepared to play Game 1 against one of those two teams.
‘But I allow my wife to come down to one once in a while to check on me. She’s allowed down.’
