“I am happy to stay at Benfica for another year to continue winning titles,” the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa America champion with Argentina told Benfica's official website on Tuesday evening.
The Argentine announced at the end of last July that he had decided not to end his career with his hometown club Rosario Central, due to threats he and his family had been subjected to since the negotiations between the two parties were announced publicly.
“It has always been my dream to return to Rosario Central and retire defending this shirt,” Di Maria explained in an interview he gave at the end of July with Rosario 3 channel.
But for the “peace of mind and happiness” of his family, he said he would prefer not to “return to Rosario.”
