Hollywood director Taika Waititi has celebrated the murder of Captain Cook by a group of enraged Pacific Islanders.

Waititi, who is currently in Sydney filming the new Thor installment, took to Instagram to share his glee on the anniversary of the British explorer’s death, which happens to fall on Valentine’s Day.

‘Today we celebrate love, and also fondly remember the demise of Captain Cook at the hands of the beautiful native Hawaiians in 1779,’ the New Zealand-born director wrote along with the caption ‘Love is in the air’.

The Jojo Rabbit director – who is of Maori descent – has long been vocal about his disdain for Cook.

Last year he shared a similar post on the anniversary of his death on February 14.

‘Hey lovers! Happy Valentines & Captain Cook peacefully passing away under the delicate care of native Hawaiians in 1779 Day! Please spread love. I love you, Polynesia!’ He wrote in 2020.

In 2016 Waititi again shared his glee at the controversial British explorer’s brutal death.

‘Sorry to do this to all you beautiful lovers on V-Day but… Happy death of Captain Cook Day! I love you, Hawaii!’ He wrote.

Captain Cook, who landed in Botany Bay with his crew in 1770, was killed on a beach in Hawaii in 1779.

The 50-year-old was stabbed in the neck by natives during his third visit to the Pacific Island group.

Cook has in recent years been criticised as a British imperialist and there have been objections to any notion he ‘discovered’ Australia, when indigenous people had occupied the continent for 60,000 years.

History of Captain Cook’s voyage

The HMS Endeavour was a British research vessel sailed by Captain James Cook.

Captain Cook set off from England in the Endeavour in 1768 in search of Australia – then known as the ‘unknown Southern Land’.

The Endeavour was a small ship – less than 100ft long – and housed a crew of around 100 sailors.

Before coming to Australia, Captain Cook reached New Zealand in 1769.

He circumnavigated New Zealand’s North and South Islands and drew the first complete chart of the country’s coast.

The Endeavour was the first ship to reach the East Coast of Australia, landing in Botany Bay in 1770.

The vessel returned to England in 1771 and was largely forgotten before it was sold in 1775 and renamed The Lord Sandwich.
