Doc Rivers has been ruthlessly fired by the Philadelphia 76ers after getting knocked out of the playoffs by the Boston Celtics on Sunday.
JJ Redick, a former 76er, is the early favorite to take over from Rivers. Mike Budenholzer, Nick Nurse, Frank Vogel, Mike D’Antoni, Monty Williams and Sam Cassell are also all going to be considered for the vacancy.
Philadelphia led Boston 3-2 in the Eastern Conference semi-finals before losing back-to-back games. A 112-88 humiliation in Game 7 Sunday was his last game in charge of the 76ers franchise.
The Sixers finished the season as the East’s No. 3 seed (54-28) behind Milwaukee and the C’s. Philadelphia swept the Nets 4-0 in the first round of the playoffs. They went up 2-1 and 3-2, losing home court twice en route to an early vacation.
Rivers had been with the Pennsylvania organization since 2020. His time in the City of Brotherly Love will not be remembered fondly after failing to push Philadelphia to the conference finals.
After securing the No. 1 seed in his first season, Philadelphia lost in seven games to the Atlanta Hawks in the semis.

The following season, the 76ers were the 4th seed, losing to the No. 1 heat in six games, once more in the semis. Most recently, Philadelphia led 3-2 after two wins in Boston but could not close out the series.
The Sixers dropped Game 6 at home 95-86 before the insipid showing at the TD Garden Sunday.
James Harden spoke to his relationship with Rivers postgame, leading some to believe he would be exiting Philadelphia for pastures anew this offseason.
‘Our relationship is OK,’ Harden said, before being asked about his 76ers future.
‘I haven’t even thought about it. I just want to have a chance to compete.’
With pressure mounting on Rivers following the final buzzer Sunday — his fifth consecutive Game 7 loss — Embiid attempted to sway the court of public opinion with praise for the longtime NBA figure.
‘Coach has been fantastic and he’s done a great job, in my opinion,’ Embiid said.
Philadelphia are now one of five NBA franchises with a vacancy at the head coach position.
The Milwaukee Bucks, Phoenix Suns, Toronto Raptors and Detroit Pistons are all on the hunt for a new figurehead.
