(Trends Wide) — Former President Donald Trump turned himself in on Tuesday before a New York court to be arraigned in connection with an investigation into alleged hush payments during the 2016 presidential election.
The Manhattan district attorney’s office is investigating Trump in connection with his alleged role in a hush money and cover-up scheme involving adult film star Stormy Daniels dating back to the 2016 presidential election. Trump faces more than 30 charges related to business fraud in this case.
It is the first time in US history that a president or former president has faced criminal charges.
That alone makes it a historical historical fact. But Trump is only months into his third run for the White House, and his criminal case puts the 2024 presidential campaign in a new phase, as the former president vowed to keep running despite the criminal charges.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s investigation began while Trump was still in the White House and relates to a $130,000 payment made by Trump’s then-personal attorney, Michael Cohen, to Daniels in late October 2016, days before the 2016 presidential elections, to silence her and not make public an alleged affair with Trump a decade earlier. Trump denied the affair.
