C.J. Gardner-Johnson asserted that he never experienced conflict with teammates in any locker room, despite perceptions of his outspoken nature. “You want me to be a leader and outspoken, but then you want me to sit back,” he said. “There’s nowhere been a locker room where I had a single issue with a teammate.”
When Philadelphia Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman traded Gardner-Johnson, he attributed the move to financial constraints, explaining the team needed to fit other key player contracts under the salary cap.
Following the trade, Gardner-Johnson posted a social media video claiming the Eagles “probably won’t see a ring without me.” He has since retracted the statement, calling the comment “disrespectful” to his former teammates.
“It’s a disrespect to Jalen Carter, A.J. Brown—I can name all those guys on that team—Lane Johnson,” Gardner-Johnson explained. He specifically cited Johnson as a veteran mentor who offered support but also held him accountable, saying, “Lane would tell me, ‘Hey, [C.J.], I got your back, but when you do too much, I don’t got your back.’ And that’s one of those moments that’s too much.”
He concluded with an apology to his former team. “I got nothing against them. And if they win six more rings without me, they deserve it, because that’s the type of players they are.”
