A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Oregon, west of Newport, at approximately 6 a.m. on Wednesday. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the tremor occurred at a depth of about 6.2 miles.
The earthquake took place in a seismically active region along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a 700-mile fault line where such events are not uncommon. Scientists predict a significant probability of a magnitude 9.0 or greater earthquake occurring along this fault within the next 50 years.
