Baseminho said, in a statement posted on Friday on his Twitter account, “I have made a personal decision to resign from the position of Minister of Interior without the possibility of backing down.”
Basmenio explained that the reasons for his decision include “unfair criticism” of his activities during the implementation of the duties of the Minister of Interior, as well as his health, as he stated that he had contracted the Coronavirus.
In late February 2021, 3 different prisons in Ecuador witnessed a wave of disturbances and widespread violence, in which 79 prisoners were killed, while a number of police forces were injured.
According to preliminary information announced by the authorities, these events were the result of conflicts between rival drug gangs.
