Lieutenant General Osama Rabie, head of the Egyptian Suez Canal Authority, announced that the authorities are considering granting compensation to ships that have stopped in the canal’s waiting areas until the giant Panamanian ship “EVER GIVEN” floats.
Rabie said, “The locomotives and rescue units are continuing their efforts to float the ship, which ran aground at 151 km, by numbering the canal, as it crossed the Suez Canal within the southern convoy, on its next voyage from China and bound for Rotterdam.”
He added, “The Canal Authority has the experience and capabilities that qualify it to float the ship successfully, especially as it is not the first accident that occurs in the canal. The canal has previously encountered such accidents and was successfully able to float and tow ships and return navigation traffic normally.”
He explained that “ships stalled in the waiting areas will stop until navigation is fully resumed and once the ship floats, the navigation traffic will work throughout the day to compensate for the delay, as well as studying compensation for ships that have stopped until the ship floats.”
“The tenth of Ramadan” and the two locomotives, Long Live Egypt 1 and 2, joined the works of floating the ship and pulling sand around it, along with 8 other locomotives that have been working since the occurrence of delinquency in reducing the load of the ballast water to float the ship and resume navigation in the canal. “
The ship’s stranding is due to the lack of visibility resulting from bad weather and dust storm, as the wind speed reached 40 knots, which led to the loss of the ability to steer the ship and its stranding. The Panamanian container ship EVER GIVEN follows the EVER GREEN shipping line, and the vessel is 400 meters long and 59 meters wide, with a total tonnage of 224,000 tons.
