Egypt stressed the need to formulate a binding legal agreement regarding the Renaissance Dam crisis that preserves Egypt’s water rights, by defining the rules for filling and operating the dam, with negotiations stalled between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia in this regard.
Egyptian presidential spokesman Bassam Radi confirmed that President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, during his discussion with the President of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, stressed the “constants of Egypt’s position on the inevitability of elaborating a binding legal agreement that includes the three countries (Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia).” It preserves Egypt’s water rights by defining the rules for filling and operating the dam, against the background of the existential issue that the Nile waters represent for Egypt and its people.
He pointed out that “Ramaphosa, for his part, expressed his appreciation for Egypt’s efforts within the framework of the negotiation track aimed at reaching a solution to the issue, stressing the continuation of intensive coordination between the two countries during the coming period to work to reach a fair and balanced agreement on this vital issue.”
